Pilates for Archery
Like so many other sports, bowling, baseball, golf, tennis, archery is by nature an unbalanced sport.
Archery is one sided in execution with repetitions of only one stabilized side (bow arm) and one moving side (draw arm)with the head set in one position. Both sides are strong. The bow arm works hard to stabilize at arms length while the draw arm demands movement of the arm, shoulder and back. This creates imbalances. Common overuse injuries include, rotator cuff, tendonitis and bursitis.
Clean technique and proper muscle recruitment, plus mental focus, are required from the beginning to the end of a shot sequence. To prevent injury the body must be balanced. Pilates and Archery share the same mind and body focus. By taking that concept and using the Pilates exercises, working symmetrically with mental focus will increase strength with precision and control in motion.
